What the syllabus asks you to cover
Low pass and Band pass signals and systems, bandwidth of a system, distortion less transmission, the Hilbert transform and its application.
Start here for the core ideas. A dedicated GitBook topic page was not available; this original guide is introductory. Use the syllabus checklist and references below to study the remaining details.
Choose a useful representation
A signal may be described in time or frequency. Periodic signals admit a Fourier-series representation; the Fourier transform extends frequency-domain reasoning to suitable aperiodic signals. The same physical waveform can have several useful mathematical descriptions, each suited to a different calculation.
Describe the system separately
Linearity means superposition applies. Time invariance means shifting an input shifts its output by the same amount. For an LTI system, the impulse response determines the output by convolution. A transfer function describes input-to-output behavior under the transform's assumptions; do not confuse it with the spectrum of one particular input.
Try it
A 1 kHz sinusoid passed through an LTI filter remains a 1 kHz sinusoid in steady state, with its amplitude and phase changed according to the filter response at that frequency.
Check your understanding
Explain energy versus power signals. How does bandwidth influence waveform shape? Practise converting a simple time-domain expression into its frequency-domain representation and back.
Pause and recall
Without looking back, explain the main idea, recall a key definition or formula, and describe when it applies. Include assumptions and units where relevant. Revisit any step you could not explain.
